The Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture is an important international prize awarded to renowned sculptors whose work has earned considerable merit and bears intrinsic significance “irrespective of art-market fashions,” according to the organization.
This year an independent jury comprised of international directors, scholars and curators awarded the prize in the form of a €15,000 endowment to Argentinian artist Fabián Marcaccio.
Marcaccio, who was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, in 1963 and currently lives in New York, has garnered international renown for work that reevaluates sculpture and painting as separate mediums. In an age of proliferating technology, Marcaccio’s work wishes to bridge the gap between the conventionally discrete mediums by merging objects and concepts through digital techniques and practices. His paintants (literally “paint mutants”) bear some resemblance to painting and sculpture altogether while reversing what these techniques have been known for in their traditional analog. The results are something more indebted to industrialization, repetition and indexicality. They are spatially characterized by an ironic and often campy, cross-breed between different artistic genres.
Along with being the 2011 recipient of the Bernhard Heiliger prize, Fabián Marcaccio will show his works at the Berlin Georg Kolbe Museum starting September 11. The exhibition will run through November 20th, 2011 and travel to Duisburg from March 15 through June 10, 2012 at the Lehmbruck Museum Duisburg.
The Bernhard Heiliger Award has been previously awarded to Antony Gormely in 2007; Fritze Schwegler in 2003; and Betrand Lavier in 1999. More information on the prize can be found on the foundation website.
