Sven Augustijnen receives Evens Art Prize 2011 Antwerp

October 5, 2011

Brussels-based artist Sven Augustijnen was announced as the winner of the Evens Art Prize 2011. Sponsored by the Evens Foundation, a European public benefit foundation based in Antwerp, the prize carries a monetary award of 15,000 EUR and participation to a publication.

An independent jury selected Augustijnen’s work from among 20 international artist finalists nominated by representatives from European art institutions.

Augustijnen will receive the award during a public presentation at the Centre Pompidou on October 17. The evening will also feature a screening of his new film Spectres and a conversation between the artist, Pompidou’s Bernard Blistène and writer Dork Zabunyan. A press release describes the film as such: “An intriguing journey into the dark regions of the Belgian colonial past, it reveals unresolved conflicts and frictions, still operating in the present, and questions the ambiguous borders between fiction and reality, the manipulative power of discourse and the fabrication of history.”

The new film is included in Augustijnen’s solo exhibition, on tour at WielsCenter for Contemporary Art in Brussels, Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Kunsthalle Bern and De Appel Amsterdam. The Tate Modern will host a special screening of Spectres on November 22.
