Kayne Griffin Corcoran’s opens with James Turrell / Los Angeles

May 22, 2013

Kayne Griffin Corcoran has announced the opening of a new gallery in Los Angeles, which will be inaugurated with a solo show by James Turrell and curated by Richard Andrews. The building integrates major permanent elements conceived by artist James Turrell, including a Skyspace, the skylights and coffered ceiling of the main galleries, and the courtyard environment. The 15,000 square foot space will open on Saturday, May 25. Renovated by Los Angeles architecture firm Standard, the 1940s vine-covered property is comprised of an existing 10,000 square foot space, as well as a 5,000 square foot exterior courtyard.

2013 sees a jointly planned trio of large-scale exhibitions of Turrell’s work at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (May), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (June), and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (June). Sooner Than Later, Roden Crater (May 25 – July 20, 2013) will include drawings, photographs, and models, as well as notes, tools, and architectural plans that chart the evolution of Turrell’s vision for the Roden Crater project over four decades.
