As demonstrated by Olafur Eliasson’s The Weather Project, Tate Modern is establishing itself not just as a museum, but also as a cultural rendezvous.

The latest invention is the result of the partnership between the British institution and UBS, the global financial services company based in Basel and Zurich and with a major presence in the United States.

“UBS Openings: Saturday Live” is a series of bimonthly performance events celebrating contemporary cultural practice at Tate Modern. The next event – scheduled for Saturday March 29 from 11 am to 5 pm – is entitled “Happening Again: Allan Kaprow’s Fluids and Scales.”

The project will recreate two major performances by Allan Kaprow, who passed away in 2005 at 79, and realize his definition of the museum as an “agency for actions.”

The first is Fluids, to be restaged on Tate Modern’s river landscape at 11 am. This work was originally commissioned by the Pasadena Art Museum on the occasion of Allan Kaprow’s mid-career survey in 1967 and involves stacking blocks of ice into a rectangular enclosure.

This poetical outdoor performance will be followed at 2 pm by Scales, which was initiated in CalArts in California and required participants to ascend and descend the campus stairwells. Participants placed cement blocks on the stairs as they made their way through the building, forming new steps to be walked on. This collective experience will be hosted in Tate Modern’s stairwellsi
