331 Summer 2020, On View

7 August 2020, 9:00 am CET

Zoé Whitley / Director at Chisenhale Gallery, London

August 7, 2020

ON VIEW is a printed and an online section in which Flash Art invites prominent figures of the art world to select the best current and upcoming international exhibitions.

“A Bottomless Silence”
Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University, New York
Through August, 2020

Jumana Manna, A Magical Substance Flows into Me, 2016. HD video. 66’. Co-commissioned by the Sharjah Art Foundation, and Chisenhale Gallery, London with Malmö Konsthall and the Biennale of Sydney. Courtesy of the artist.

“A Bottomless Silence” was not intended to be a digital exhibition at all; so the Wallach Art Gallery organizers rallied valiantly to make aspects of the exhibition accessible online with works by Jumana Manna, Walid Raad, and Nadia Kaabi-Linke. Also shared online is Manna’s elegiac film A Magical Substance Flows into Me (a Chisenhale Gallery and Sharjah Art Foundation co-commission), which evokes Palestine’s complex psychic landscape.

Thao Nguyen Phan
“Monsoon Melody”
WIELS – Centre d’Art Contemporain, Bruxelles
Through August 16, 2020

Thao Nguyen Phan, Mute Grain, 2019. Three-channel video projection, colour, sound. 15’45”. Courtesy of Chisenhale Gallery, London.

In the spirit of optimistically reemerging physically into our cultural spaces, Thao Nguyen Phan’s “Monsoon Melody” has reopened at WIELS. The exhibition is her largest to date and reveals unique synergies between painting, sculpture, and moving image. While aesthetically beguiling, the works expose convenient glorifications and equally expedient amnesiac episodes in the retelling of history.

“TRANSMISSION”
Available online

TRANSMISSIONS, Episode 5, 2020. Courtesy of Mykki Blanco.

The most exciting endeavor I’ve come across since the Great Pause began is the artist-collective initiative “TRANSMISSIONS,” initiated by Tai Shani, Anne Duffau, and Hana Noorali. The format harks back to DIY cable access — think Wayne’s World meets the computer desktop of your favorite artist. New episodes are live-streamed on twitch.tv every Thursday night at 9:00 p.m., repeated 9:00 a.m. the following morning to accommodate varying time zones. Tune in or miss out.
