55th Venice Biennale Artists Announced

March 18, 2013

The list of artists participating in Massimiliano Gioni’s Venice Biennale, “The Encyclopedic Palace,” has now been announced.

The exhibition’s title and theme were inspired by Italian-American artist Marino Auriti, who conceived of an encyclopedic museum of world culture in Washington, D.C. that would be 136 stories tall across 16 blocks and called the “Palazzo Enciclopedico” (“Encyclopedic Palace). Gioni writes in his introduction: “With works spanning over the past century alongside several new commissions and with over one hundred and fifty artists from more than thirty-seven countries, the exhibition is structured like a temporary museum that initiates an inquiry into the many ways in which images have been used to organize knowledge and shape our experience of the world.”

While there are some well-known players including Nauman, Condo, Sherman, McCarthy, de Maria, Guyton, Serra, Trecartin, Fischli & Weiss, Kjartansson, Sarah Lucas and Steve McQueen, Gioni has also selected some rather interesting and more obscure artists from across the globe. The list includes a large number of young artists, as well as artist’s who have been featured in major shows at the New Museum including George Condo, Phyllida Barlow, Otto Piene, Ellen Altfest, and Tacita Dean.

Gioni’s exhibition will be split between the central pavilion of the giardini and the arsenale while the rest of the biennale will be made up of 88 national exhibitions.
