This year The Armory Show’s third edition of the invitation-only Armory Focus has turned its attention to the Nordic countries.
Armory Focus: The Nordic Countries will be curated by the director of the Swedish non-profit institution Malmö Kunsthall Jacob Fabricius, who has selected galleries from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. Paul Morris, founding director of The Armory Show, says: “The decision to focus on the Nordic Countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, centered around a discussion about an important and thriving art community, yet one that is often under-represented as a region – and the Nordic region is just that. The extensive and overwhelming network of artists, curators, collectors, museums, and galleries attests to the Nordic’s international importance and we want Armory Focus to highlight the region’s contribution to the international art community.” Commercial galleries include Galerie Anhava from Helsinki, Martin Asbæk, V1 and Bo Bjerggaard from Copenhagen, Niklas Belenius from Stockholm an i8 from Reykjavík. Fabricus also invited a few artist-run spaces to the fair, such as Gallery D.O.R. and NoPlace. The mission behind Armory Focus is to shed light on a dynamic arts community. In 2011 the focus was on Latin America.
