Stedelijk Museum to reopen in September / Amsterdam

The news is greeted with enthusiasm by the art world: StedelijkMuseum in Amsterdam will be reopened on September 22. After years of renovations — which included the construction of a new building (10,000 square meters) designed by Mels Crouwel and dedicated to temporary exhibitions — Director Ann Goldstein gave a preview of the upcoming exhibition projects. In addition to strengthening the network with the neighbouring institutions — the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw — “Beyond Imagination”, a group show featuring the works of 20 artists active in the Netherlands, has been scheduled. The collection, which includes Vincent Van Gogh, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Franz Marc, Chaim Soutine, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich, Jackson Pollock and Max Beckmann, will be displayed in a totally new setting. One of the most expected appointments of the season is Mike Kelley’s retrospective, on view from December 14. As Ann Goldstein stated: “With this long-awaited opening, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will reaffirm and strengthen its place among leading international art institutions, cast light on today’s Amsterdam as a center of artistic experimentation and bring new life to the Museumplein, one of the world’s most important cultural landscapes”.
