Greg Hilty has been appointed Curatorial Director, Head of Exhibitions & Artist Liaison at Lisson Gallery. He will take up his post on the 6th May 2008 and joins a growing senior management team at the gallery, which has already seen Jennifer Bews join as Management Director and Matthew Smith as Sales Director in the last eighteen months alone.
These moves signify the strength and expansion of Lisson, which has been operating since 1967 and already hosts an impressive range of minimalist and conceptual artists, including the likes of Sol LeWitt, Dan Graham, Daniel Buren, Lawrence Weiner, Jonathon Monk, Jane and Louise Wilson, Ceal Floyer, Christian Jankowski and Gerard Byrne. The move is also interesting given the increasing number of curators moving form public institutions to commercial enterprises, and hints at the fact that such spaces can compete with international museums in terms of international quality and financial muscle.
Hilty’s career has been focused in London: from his early days at Riverside Studios in West London he moved to the Hayward in the early 90’s as a senior curator. From there he gained the position of Director of Arts for London Arts and Director of Visual Arts and Literature for the Arts Council England’s London office, positions he held from 1999–2004. In 2005 he founded Plus Equals with the University of the Arts London, which set out to give practical stability to artistic initiatives across different disciplines.
