On March 5, Josephine Meckseper will present Manhattan Oil Project, the second installation at the Last Lot project space organized by the Art Production Fund. The artist will present two new 25 feet tall fully motorised kinetic sculptures. The black and red steel structures (formally reminiscent of the large-scale kinetic sculptures of Jean Tinguely, Alexander Calder, and Mark Di Suvero) will slowly creak recalling America’s decaying industrial past, “I hope to draw parallels between the American industrial system, transitioning from a past of heavy industry, factories, and teamsters and the disembodied present of electronic mass-media, surface advertising, and consumerism – so clearly embodied in Times Square,” explained Meckseper, “The critical placement of the pumps is a conceptual gesture that raises questions about business and capital; land use and resources; wealth and decay; decadence and dependence.” The founders of the Art Production Fund, Doreen Remen and Yvonne Force Villareal, chose the vacant lot next to Times Square on 46th Street and Eighth Avenue as part of the Times Square Alliance’s public art program that works to bring cutting-edge art to Times Square. The Art Production Fund presents a series of projects, each on view there for about three months. The first project of the series was Desert Rooftops by David Brooks which ran from November 2011 through to February 5 2012.
